British Museum

The British Library holds the only known medieval manuscript of this epic saga. This manuscript committed to parchment a tale that (in some modern scholars’ opinions) had been passed down for centuries.

English Department: Born a Crime

Born a Crime

by Trevor Noah

Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime is a brilliant and witty memoir that illustrates an unbreakable bond between mother and son. Noah’s poignant prose creates a startling portrayal of his experience growing up in South Africa during apartheid. This memoir, while filled with Noah’s quick wit and humor, is a thought-provoking and insightful look into the life of a comedian who, quite literally, was born a crime.

In conversation with Tamala Edwards, anchor, 6ABC Action News morning edition

Known mainly to American audiences as the “charming and composed” (Los Angeles Times) host of the Emmy and Peabody-award winning The Daily Show, Trevor Noah had already won worldwide acclaim with The Racist, his 2012 Edinburgh Fringe Festival one-man show. The son of a white Swiss father and a black South African mother who had to pretend to be his father’s servant during all-too brief moments of family interaction, he experienced a deeply unconventional childhood during the last days of Apartheid and the unsure years that followed its abolition. Born a Crime is the coming-of-age memoir of a country at the crossroads and Noah’s tender, tough, often funny childhood.

Antisemitism

“The term was coined in 1879 by the German writer Wilhelm Marr to categorize the anti-Jewish sentiment then increasing in Europe; he first used it in a pamphlet entitled “The Victory of Judaism over Germanism.” Marr based the term on a linguistic category: the Semitic languages, which include Hebrew as well as many ancient languages like Akkadian and various languages spoken today in the Middle East and North Africa by people of many different races and origins.”

Map of Movement by the Nama and Herero

Regions and Peoples of Southern Africa

“This map shows the approximate traditional locations of the various peoples in southern Africa during the period 1500–1900. Prior to European colonization, diverse groups of African peoples populated the region. On the dry desert lands of the southwest, pastoral and nomadic tribes, like the San, Khoikoi, Herero, and Nama, traveled over a wide expanse of land. The southeastern side, however, had a history that was more contentious. Many battles occurred, particularly during the reign of Shaka, a Zulu chief. Because of weaknesses resulting from inexperienced military strategists in the western tribes and exhausted military forces due to exhaustion after numerous battles on the eastern region, Europeans had little difficulty colonizing southern Africa in the nineteenth century.”
